Self-proclaimed as Bath’s best Sunday roast, The Chequers holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand award and has built and maintained its reputation for consistently excellent roasts, served in an understated dining room close to both the Royal Crescent and the Circus.
If you don’t fancy travelling into the city, the family run restaurant at Castle Farm in Midford has been ranked among the very best Sunday roasts in the country. Expect homemade roast potatoes and 42-day-aged beef rump. They even offer takeaways if you like the idea of eating in your cottage without cooking. Head further into the Cotswolds, and The Swan in Southrop and The Horse and Groom in Bourton-on-the-Hill are both well worth booking ahead for.

The White Hart in Fyfield, a 15th-century chantry house just seven miles south of Oxford, offers a genuinely striking medieval dining room with vaulted ceilings and flagstone floors. Their Sunday roasts are often considered one of the best in the county. Closer to the city, the Magdalen Arms on Iffley Road is a longstanding local favourite for its rustic take on the traditional lunch. Book ahead for both, they’re destination pubs for a reason.
