Summer challenge: identifying insects
16 August 2024This week, we're getting up close and personal with nature! It's time to become a bug hunter!
Why bugs are awesome
Before we start catching creepy crawlies, let's talk about why bugs are so important. They might be small, but they play a huge role in our world. Bees, for example, help flowers grow by spreading pollen. Butterflies are beautiful and help plants reproduce too. Even worms help to make the soil healthy for plants to grow in. So, next time you see a bug, remember how important it is!
Bug hunting gear
To catch your bugs, you'll need a few things:
- A small net (a fishing net works great, or you can use an old pillowcase)
- A magnifying glass (optional, but really cool!)
- A container with a lid (to safely observe your bugs)
- A grown-up to help you
How to bug hunt
- Find a good spot: Look for places with lots of plants and flowers. Your garden, a local park, or even your backyard is a great place to start.
- Sweep and catch: Gently sweep your net through the grass or over flowers. Try to be quick!
- Observe: Carefully take your bugs out of the net and put them in your container. Use your magnifying glass to get a closer look.
- Learn and release: Try to identify the bugs you've caught. You can use books, websites, or apps to help you. Once you’re done, let them go back to where you found them.
Share your bug adventures

Remember: Always be gentle with the bugs. And if you're unsure about a bug, ask a grown-up for help.
Happy bug hunting!
