Summer challenge: Make a bird feeder
05 August 2024Transform a used plastic bottle to create the perfect feeder for your garden birds.
We're back with week 3 of this year's Summer Challenge.
This week, we're going to create a bird feeder to help our feathered friends enjoy a tasty snack.
Why make a bird feeder?
Birds are amazing creatures that play a vital role in our ecosystem. They help to control pests, pollinate flowers, and spread seeds. By making a bird feeder, you're helping to support our local bird population. Plus, it's a great way to learn about different bird species and their habits.
What you'll need:
- A clean plastic bottle
- Birdseed
- Scissors
- String or ribbon
- Decorations (optional)
- A skewer, pencil, or stick
Instructions:
- Clean your bottle: Make sure your plastic bottle is clean and dry.
- Cut a hole: Ask an adult to help you cut two holes opposite each other near the top of the bottle – you could even add more holes around your bottle. These will be the openings for the birds to access the food.
- Create a perch: Push a skewer, pencil, or stick through the bottle to create a perch for the birds.
- Fill with seed: Pour birdseed into the bottle until it's almost full.
- Hang your feeder: Tie a piece of string or ribbon to the cap of the bottle and hang it from a tree branch or a sturdy hook.
- Top it up: As the birds enjoy seed from your feeder, you'll notice the level drop. Keep it topped up to keep them happy, especially through the colder months when there's less food available.
Decorate your feeder: If you want to get creative, you can decorate your bird feeder with paint, markers, or stickers. Just make sure to use non-toxic materials that are safe for birds.
Tips for birdwatching:
- Find a quiet spot in your garden to watch your bird feeder.
- Use a bird identification guide to help you learn about the different birds that visit your feeder.
- Keep your feeder clean and filled with fresh food.
